Ecotoxicology ("toxicology in an ecological perspective") is a discipline resulting from pollution events that harmed human and environmental health by the mid-twentieth century. It is the study of the effects of toxic chemicals on biological organisms, especially at the population, community, ecosystem, and biosphere levels. In ecosystems that are already affected by pollution, ecotoxicological studies can inform the choice of action to restore ecosystem services, structures, and functions efficiently and effectively.
Today, ecotoxicology is an important research area which interests many young environmentalists. ABOUT SPEAKER
DR. ROSHAN D'SOUZA
Dr. Roshan D’ Souza Associate Professor and Head of Zoology Department, Sophia College for Women, Mumbai. She has 32 year of teaching experience and has also served as Vice Principal of Science. She has Research expertise in toxicology addressing the research problems related to ecotoxicity. She is Currently guiding six Ph. D. students in the related field she is the chairperson of the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee of Sophia College, which ensures that experiments on animals are carried out as per ethical guidelines of CCSEA, India. Dr. D’ Souza has presented and published research papers and is a co-author of 7 zoology textbooks published by University of Mumbai. As a Zoology teacher, she has contributed to sensitizing students towards the conservation of biodiversity through talks, field excursions, habitat studies and field projects. She regularly organizes events related to themes of environment conservation and has been actively engaged in the science outreach activities. She has been awarded the prestigious, national level Best Teachers Award 2021 instituted by Indian National Science Academies, India to recognize and honor teachers for providing guidance and mentoring student to take up careers in Science and Technology.
