Bird Behaviour and Migration-Theory, Fieldwork and Research Methods
What can a bird’s behaviour reveal about its ecology, survival and movement across landscapes? From foraging and social interactions to seasonal migration across thousands of kilometres, avian behaviour offers a fascinating window into how birds respond to their environment. This workshop explores the science behind these behaviours and introduces the approaches researchers use to study them in the field.
Going beyond simply observing birds, participants will be introduced to behavioural sampling, ethograms, migration research methods, field study design, detectability and sources of bias, and approaches to working with field data. The workshop will connect theory with practical research thinking, helping participants understand how observations can be transformed into meaningful research questions and scientifically sound studies.

Mr. Orvill Nazareth is a wildlife ecologist and Research Associate working on leopard ecology and conservation in Mumbai. He holds a Master’s degree in Wildlife Biology and has worked on a diverse range of avian and mammalian species, including lesser floricans, vultures, white-bellied sea-eagles, Nilgiri martens, tigers, and leopards.
His interests lie in population ecology, conservation science, and the use of spatial tools such as GIS and remote sensing in wildlife research. His experience combines field-based ecological research with quantitative and spatial approaches to understanding wildlife populations and informing conservation.
