Understanding Primates: Diversity, Behaviour, and Conservation
Primates are our closest living relatives, yet they face growing challenges across India—from increasing human–primate interactions in cities to habitat pressures in forested regions. Understanding primates today is not limited to textbooks; it requires familiarity with how they are observed, studied, and discussed within ecological and conservation contexts.
This workshop is designed to bridge foundational academic knowledge with an introduction to practical approaches used in primate studies. Participants will be guided through the basics of Indian primate diversity and behaviour, along with an introduction to field methods such as population surveys, health monitoring, and behavioural data recording.
The sessions will also introduce key conservation frameworks relevant to primates in India, including an overview of the Wildlife Protection Act (with recent amendments) and the IUCN Red List categories, helping participants understand how species status and protection are formally classified.
By combining biological concepts, Indian examples, and introductory policy context, this workshop offers a structured learning experience for anyone interested in primates, ecology, or conservation studies.
