S Balasubramaniyam, a GIS consultant and researcher, brings a wealth of experience to the online workshop. With a Master's degree in Geoinformatics from the University of Madras and a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Mumbai, he has conducted numerous training workshops across India, offering expertise in spatial analysis, modelling, and change detection analysis. His proficiency extends to a variety of GIS tools and platforms, including ArcGIS Suite, QGIS, Google Earth Engine, and Small world, coupled with programming skills in Python, C++, and Magik. S Balasubramaniyam has coauthored patents and authored publications on innovative approaches in integrating geospatial technology with Extended Reality (XR).

COURSE SYLLABUS

Getting Started with Python for GIS Objective:

Introduce Python basics with a GIS focus, in a friendly and accessible manner for complete beginners.

Topics:What is Python? Why is it used in GIS?
Python syntax: variables, strings, numbers, lists, dictionaries
Control structures: if statements, for and while loops
Functions and importing libraries
Setting up your environment: Jupyter Notebook / Google Colab

Hands-on Exercises:

Hello World and simple arithmetic
Write a basic calculator using variables
Create a loop to print and filter values
Write a simple function (e.g., to convert meters to kilometers)
Tools: Jupyter Notebook or Google Colab (no installation needed)

Introduction to Tabular and Spatial Data

Objective: Introduce the concept of spatial data, Pandas, and GeoPandas for handling and visualizing vector data.

Topics: What is spatial data? (Points, lines, polygons – real-world examples)
What is a shapefile, and what is GeoJSON?
Overview of tabular data with pandas
Introduction to geopandas – how it builds on pandas
Coordinate Reference Systems (CRS) – simple explanation
Hands-on Exercises:
Load a CSV in pandas (e.g., cities and populations)
Load a shapefile with GeoPandas (e.g., country boundaries)
Plot spatial features on a map
Access geometry attributes (e.g., centroid, area)
Reproject a shapefile to a new CRS

Libraries:

pandas, geopandas, matplotlib

Spatial Analysis with Vector Data

Topics: Spatial joins: combine data based on location
Attribute joins: merge data based on common fields
Geometry operations: buffer, intersect, clip
Dissolve and grouping features
Hands-on Exercises:
Join population data to district shapefile
Create buffers around points (e.g., hospitals)
Clip roads to a city boundary
Dissolve multiple areas into a region

Visualization and Sharing Spatial Data

Topics: Static maps vs interactive maps
Customizing map visuals (colors, labels, legends)
Exporting shapefiles and GeoJSON
Introduction to web mapping using Folium
Hands-on Exercises:
Visualize vector data with customized styles
Create an interactive web map showing locations
Export results as shapefile and GeoJSON
