Marine Biodiversity & Climate Change:
Ecology, Research & Conservation Certificate Course
2026
Marine ecosystems play a critical role in sustaining life on Earth, yet they are increasingly affected by climate change, pollution, and human activities. From coral reef degradation to changing ocean conditions, understanding marine biodiversity today requires more than theoretical knowledge—it involves knowing how these systems function, how they are studied, and how conservation decisions are made.
This workshop is designed to introduce participants to the fundamentals of marine biodiversity and ecology, with a focus on Indian marine ecosystems such as coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds. It also explores how climate change impacts marine systems, including ocean warming, acidification, and their effects on biodiversity and fisheries.
Participants will be introduced to commonly used research approaches in marine science, including basic survey methods, biodiversity monitoring, and an overview of tools such as environmental DNA (eDNA) and spatial mapping. The sessions will also cover how ecological data is interpreted and applied in real-world research and conservation contexts.
By combining ecological concepts, climate-related insights and introductory research approaches, this workshop offers structured learning experience for anyone interested in marine biology, environmental science or conservation studies.

Dr. Prachi Hatkar
About the Teacher
-
Senior Project Officer, DES Pune University
-
Researcher (Former), Wildlife Institute of India
-
Collaborator with marine conservation and policy initiatives in India
Dr. Prachi Hatkar is a marine conservationist who works to protect coastal and marine ecosystems through research, policy work, and community involvement. She focuses on understanding marine biodiversity and finding practical ways to conserve it.
She is currently a Senior Project Officer at DES Pune University and was previously associated with the Wildlife Institute of India, where she worked on the national CAMPA-funded dugong recovery programme. Her work includes studying dugong habitats, as well as research on sea turtles, sea snakes, and seagrass ecosystems. She is especially interested in conservation approaches that involve local communities and stakeholders.
She is also involved in conservation-related advisory work and new technologies used in marine research. She is a member of the IMO GloNoise Research Committee, where she contributes to work on understanding how underwater noise affects marine mammals.
