How do we study wildlife? Logic, Methods & Tools

Most wild animals are rarely seen - yet we study them, monitor them, and make conservation decisions about them. How?

This course is designed for anyone who has observed any wildlife, become curious and wondered:
“How do I go beyond observing… and actually study this?”

This beginner-friendly course introduces the core concepts, methods, and tools used to study wildlife in the real world. Instead of focusing on technical or statistical complexity, the course tries to build clear thinking, smart study design, and the logic behind choosing the right approach for different research questions. Participants will explore both traditional and modern wildlife sampling methods, understand their applications and limitations, and learn how to interpret their results critically. Through interactive discussions, practical activities, and hands-on problem-solving, learners will gain the confidence to select suitable methods for their own research ideas.

Veerendra Naidu

About the Teacher

Research Scholar (PhD) - National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS-TIFR), Bengaluru

Veerendra is an ecologist, fascinated by the resilience of wildlife in an increasingly human-dominated world. He is currently a PhD candidate at the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS-TIFR), Bengaluru. He completed his Master's in Ecology with a Gold Medal and was a DST-INSPIRE Scholar at Pondicherry University.

He has worked as a Research Assistant with the Human-wildlife Interactions Project at Wildlife Conservation Society–India, where he spent two years studying how carnivores, especially leopards, persist in the densely human landscape of Mumbai. His work broadly explores human-wildlife coexistence and how wildlife persists in human-dominated landscapes.

Veerendra has actively engaged with diverse audiences through talks and workshops on urban biodiversity and human–wildlife conflict. With experience in wildlife research & science communication, he aims to make ecology approachable and engaging, encouraging people to move beyond observation and start understanding the natural world. He believes that studying wildlife doesn’t always require remote forests - sometimes, all it takes is curiosity and a window.

Besides ecology, he enjoys music, travelling and cats!

His Key Achievements:

  1. GATE (Ecology & Evolution) - AIR 24

  2. Gold medal in Ecology at Pondicherry University

  3. Awarded the Presidential Best Student Gold Medal by the Vice President of India.

  4. DST-INSPIRE Scholar

BASIC COURSE SYLLABUS

Think like a wildlife researcher

Part 1: Why sampling?

  • Concept and logic of ‘sampling’

  • Why are wild animals sampled, not censused? - the challenge of wildlife studies

  • What can we find with sampling (presence, diversity, behaviour, population size, etc)

  • Types of sampling (random, stratified, systematic, opportunistic, etc.)

Part 2: How to pick the right sampling for a question?

  • Converting curiosity to research questions

  • Deciding where, when, what and how to sample

  • How much sampling effort and replication?

  • What is my spatial and temporal scale?

  • What else (metadata) do I need to collect?

  • Common beginner mistakes

  • Ethics and legality in wildlife sampling

Interactive exercise:  Designing a sampling plan!
Activity: Collect data for a hands-on demo study (simple 10-minute observation from home!)
