Mammal Ecology – Fundamentals, Methods & Applications
Mammals are among the most diverse and ecologically significant groups of animals, occupying nearly every habitat on Earth—from dense forests and grasslands to deserts and urban landscapes. Their behaviours, adaptations, and interactions with the environment make them key components of ecosystem functioning. Studying mammal ecology not only helps us understand these complex relationships but also provides essential insights into biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability.
Mammal Ecology – Fundamentals, Methods & Applications is designed to introduce learners to the scientific study of mammals through a balanced combination of theory and practical approaches. The course begins with core ecological concepts and gradually progresses to behavioural patterns, habitat use, and population dynamics. It also emphasizes real-world skills such as field observation, identification of tracks and signs, and basic data analysis—tools that are fundamental to wildlife research and monitoring.
The scope of this course extends beyond classroom learning. It covers ecological roles of mammals, their adaptive strategies, and their responses to environmental pressures such as habitat loss and human–wildlife conflict. By linking ecological theory with field-based methods and conservation practices, the course provides a holistic understanding of how mammals survive, interact, and evolve within changing ecosystems.

VANISHREE NAIK
About the Teacher
Project Associate,ATREE
Research Assistant,Wildlife Conservation Society India
Collaborator,Maharashtra Forest Department.
Vanishree Naik is an emerging environmental scientist passionate about wildlife conservation, ecology, and community engagement. With a Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences – Conservation Practice, she brings a holistic perspective to understanding the intricate balance between ecosystems and human livelihoods.
Vanishree’s work focuses on bridging the gap between scientific research and conservation action. Her interests lie in behavioural ecology, biodiversity conservation, and environmental education, with an emphasis on developing sustainable solutions that promote coexistence between people and nature.
Through her collaborations with research institutions and conservation initiatives, Vanishree has contributed to projects aimed at habitat restoration, species monitoring, and community-based conservation. She is committed to using science as a tool for positive change — fostering environmental awareness and inspiring young minds to engage with nature meaningfully.
As an educator and researcher, Vanishree strives to make ecological concepts accessible to all, empowering others to take part in safeguarding our natural world.
